Update on Extracurricular Activities

On Friday, January 29th the Premier and his team provided an update to Alberta’s COVID-19 situation and described a path forward regarding the lifting of restrictions. This ‘roadmap’ outlines the sectors that will see gradual restriction changes at each step based on hospitalization benchmarks. With respect to schools and extracurricular activities, the announcement reads:

Indoor and outdoor children’s sport and performance (Effective February 8, 2021)

  • Children’s sport and performance activities are permitted if they are related to school activities, such as physical education classes.

  • This will allow K-12 schools and post-secondary institutions to use off-site facilities to support curriculum-related educational activities.

In order to keep transmission rates to a minimum, after-school sports and clubs remain paused at this time. This decision aligns with what is happening in other minor sports in the province (e.g., minor hockey). We remain committed to following direction from AHS and we will review this decision as more information becomes available from the province.
