Important Update on Masks in Schools

September 3, 2021

Today, the Alberta Government announced new temporary measures in response to the Delta variant and varying regional vaccination rates. Starting September 4, masks are mandatory for all indoor public spaces and workplaces across Alberta.

We have reviewed our return to school practices in order to align with the new measures announced by the province. Effective Tuesday, September 7, masks will be mandatory for all Grade 4-12 students, all staff and visitors in common areas in St. Paul Education buildings (ie: entrance ways, boot rooms, hallway). As per past health recommendations, students in K-3 are highly encouraged to wear masks while in common areas.

Masks will not be mandatory in classrooms or where students are participating in instructional activities in other areas of the school (gymnasium, library, CTS labs, etc.). Masks are also not required outdoors. Students and staff who choose to wear masks in instructional areas will be supported in their decision to do so.

As per the provincial public health order, all students (K-12) and staff are still required to wear masks on school buses.

Anyone unable to wear a mask due to a medical condition will require a medical exemption letter from an authorized health professional. The form is available at https://www.alberta.ca/assets/documents/covid-19-masking-medical-exception-letter-template.pdf

At this time, we are not making any other changes to our Return to School plan. This means that we will NOT be bringing back cohorts, limiting extra-curricular activities, or limiting the ability of students to interact with other students at noon hour and recess.

Please be aware that all students, staff and visitors are required to complete the Alberta Health Daily Checklist to determine whether they can attend or stay home.

We would like to thank you for your ongoing cooperation and understanding as we continue to adjust to changing conditions.
